Ellis Early Learning raised nearly $21,000 at its Baking Challenge fundraiser with special guest judge Joanne Chang on Sunday, June 9, to support its daily meal program for students at the nonprofit's South End and Jamaica Plain centers.

While they were all hungry for Chef Chang's approval, Smith ultimately won the Baking Challenge with artisanal scones crafted with simple ingredients accessible to all.

"As a chef, it is heartening to see kids learning about the power of food at such a young age," said Chang, an award-winning pastry chef and founder of Flour Bakery and Myers + Chang restaurant. "I was so incredibly impressed with the care and dedication of every single person I met." Lauren Cook, CEO of Ellis Early Learning, told the audience, "I just can't thank (her) enough for highlighting our work and for your support and making this possible."
