The state-of-the-art, four-story, 83,000 square feet facility will be home to 900 students from Roxbury Prep High School and Roxbury Prep Proctor St. Middle School, accommodating students from the current Mission Hill, Hyde Park, and Nubian Square campuses.
Amenities include a full-sized gymnasium, performing arts spaces for stage production, top-notch science labs, an art room, a spacious cafeteria, and an exercise and strength training room. The school will open in the Summer of 2025 and will play an essential role in revitalizing the Newmarket neighborhood.
Founded in 1999, Roxbury Prep has built a national reputation for outstanding academic outcomes for Black and Latino students from low-income communities. Roxbury Prep will contribute to the work already being done by the Newmarket Business Improvement District, the City of Boston, and Suffolk Construction to make this area a thriving business and arts district.
The school is being built across from a park that is getting a 7 million renovation, which had long been neglected. Studies show that a new school can be the catalyst for revitalizing neighborhoods in cities. Recent federal data show the average school building in America is nearly half a century old, even as students perform better on tests when their school buildings are well-maintained and modern.
